5 Reasons You’ll Love The Garden Cafe

Garden of Eating is excited to announce the opening of our new restaurant, The Garden Cafe. The cafe was the vision of Lisa Hawkins and Ethan Roberts, co-owners of Garden of Eating Catering. “We saw a need for affordable, fresh, and healthy food that is gourmet quality, but that’s also accessible to everyone,” says Lisa. “This has been in the works for awhile, and we’re so excited to share our menu with everyone.”

With a massive menu, there are plenty of reasons to visit The Garden Cafe, but here are a few of our favorites.

1. Fresh, local, and organic ingredients

Garden of Eating and The Garden Cafe are committed to providing only the best, which means that we use local fresh ingredients.

For example, be sure to try our Farmer’s Market Sandwich, made with Granny Smith apples, white cheddar, onion-thyme jam, grainy mustard, and baby greens. If veg isn’t quite your thing, try our Chipotle Gouda Burger, or our “Ragin Reuben” made with corned beef, gruyere cheese, cranberry mustard, and your choice of sauerkraut or arugula.

2. The quality of GOE Catering in a restaurant

For nearly 15 years, Garden of Eating Catering has been proudly serving the local community. We’ve established a reputation over the years for outstanding quality and service in the food industry. We know that the service and presentation you receive when you dine out is just as important as the food that you’re eating. With The Garden Cafe, you don’t have to choose between great service and great food — you can have both!

3. We deliver!

If you can’t make it to our restaurant, we’ll bring the “garden” to you! Within Century City for orders of $10 or more, we’ll gladly bring your lunch to your office so that you don’t have to leave to experience wonderful dining!

4. Fresh-pressed juices and smoothies

Some of our favorite menu items are our fresh-pressed juices made with only the best produce. Fruit juice has been shown to reduce cancer risk, support healthy digestion, and improve your immune system. Combine that with our delicious juices and smoothies and you have a great option for breakfast, lunch, or a quick snack when you’re on the go.

Try our “We Got the Beet,” made with beets, apple, lemon, and ginger, or “The Plaza’s Green Giant,” made with kale, spinach, romaine, parsley, cucumber, celery, apple, and lemon.

5. Email us your order.

In a hurry? We totally understand. Healthy fresh food doesn’t have to take forever. Simply email us your order directly, wait for your confirmation email, and your food will be ready for pickup when you arrive. Perfect for office lunches, a quick stop between appointments, or lunch in the park.

The Garden Cafe is located just off of Santa Monica Boulevard on lobby level at 1840 Century Park East. We have seating both indoors and on an outdoor patio and validated parking. We will be opening Monday, November 3rd!

Come by and see us, and find out how flavor, freshness, and affordability come together in one place.

Halloween Treats to Make the Kids Scream!

Fall has officially arrived. Along with the changing leaves and the cooler temperatures comes one of the most beloved holidays of the year, Halloween. And no one loves Halloween more than children.

Between hayrides, carving jack-o-lanterns, touring haunted houses, and visiting the pumpkin patch, there are plenty of activities perfect for enjoying the autumn weather. Add to your Halloween festivities some scary snacks that your kids will love. Best of all, they’re easy to create and fun for the whole family!

Creepy Cookies

Get some Halloween cookie cutters at your local grocery store or party supply store. Choose your favorite shapes from among the jack-o-lanterns, ghosts, witches, and goblins and use them to create the foundation for beautifully decorated cookies.

After the cookies have baked and cooled, your kids will have a blast decorating them with icing, Halloween sprinkles, and candy. You can even ue stick pretzels or Twizzlers to turn an average cookie into a creepy crawling spider.

But don’t stop there: cookie cutters aren’t just for cookies! Use them to cut toast for dipping, create Jello molds, cut shallow casseroles, or create instant Halloween brownies.

A Cake Graveyard

A chocolate cake can become a dark and spooky graveyard with just a few quick additions:

  • Bake your cake. After it cools, carefully coat it with your preferred icing.
  • Bake some thin sugar cookies to be used as headstones.
  • Crumble Oreos or Halloween sprinkles on top of the cake.
  • Place the baked sugar cookie headstones in the cake so that they protrude from the “ground” as shown.
  • Add some creative finishing touches such as gummy worms, candy corn pumpkins, or “trees” made of sugar cookies with chocolate icing or chocolate-dipped stick pretzels.

Spooky and Cheesy

Any simple pizza or quesadilla can be transformed into a Halloween delight with a little bit of imagination. Cut tortillas or pre-packaged pizza dough into fun shapes using a knife or a cookie cutter. Cover with desired sauce and cheese. Finally, use veggies and fruit to make faces:

  • Use sliced peppers or apple slices for the mouth.
  • Place olives for eyes.
  • Use raw, roasted, steamed, or sautéed broccoli for crazy hair or eyebrows.

Think Green – For Everything!

Halloween is the time to go green – by bringing out every green food you can come up with!

  • Create green “slime” by adding green food coloring to vanilla pudding or frozen yogurt.
  • Host a “Frankenstein” party with only green foods allowed. Serve pasta with pesto sauce and a spinach salad for a meal that will make guests scream.
  • For a healthy appetizer or side for any meal, slice some green fruits and vegetables such as kiwi, green grapes, celery, cucumber, and honeydew melons.

Make this Halloween one that your kids will never forget with these fun snacks. Host a family-friendly gathering for your neighborhood or kid’s party. And most of all, have a wonderful and safe Halloween from all of us at Garden of Eating Catering!

Garden of Eating Featured in Palisadian-Post Magazine

lisa and ethanGarden of Eating is proud to have been featured recently in Palisadian-Post Magazine. The company profile centers around Garden of Eating’s long-standing reputation for quality and versatility in the Pacific Palisades and Los Angeles area.

The article points out some of the challenges of the foodservice and catering industries, including changing food trends and the turbulent economy. However since the 1980s, we have been putting the needs of the community first and providing nothing but the best quality food no matter what event we are catering.

As the article notes, we are able to offer the perfect balance of versatility and specialization. We can prepare a wide variety of different meals. In a diverse metropolis such as Los Angeles, we must be able to expertly prepare dishes from around the world. As a result, we are famous for our diverse international cuisine options.

In addition, we are able to flexibly provide catering service for both large and small events. While we are known around the area for catering private home gatherings, we have also catered large events, including weddings, corporate events, and perhaps most notably, the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, which we have been a part of since 2004.

Over the years, our events have allowed us to serve several celebrities, including Adam Sandler, Taylor Lautner, Vin Diesel, Johnny Depp, and Jack Black, just to name a few.

Garden of Eating is experiencing a time of great growth at the moment with the recent launch of two exciting new outgrowths. We recently launched Garden Fresh Meals, an alternative to cooking at home that delivers fresh, healthy, and professionally-prepared meals right to your door. Soon, we will be opening our first restaurant, Garden Cafe.

We’d like to thank Palisadian-Post Magazine for their excellent profile of our company.

7 Dinner Party Theme Ideas

With the seasons starting to change, it’s that time of the year when we transition our get-togethers with loved ones from outdoors to indoors. One of the best parts about hosting a dinner party is creating a fun theme. The possibilities are endless, but here are some of our favorite dinner party theme ideas for your next gathering.

No matter what theme you choose, follow these tips:

  • Keep it simple. The gathering is all about spending time with friends and family, so don’t worry about complicated recipes or a perfect place setting. Keep it simple and everyone, yourself included, will have a good time.
  • Strive for balance with food and drink. Let the focus of the gathering be either food or drink, not both. If you are showcasing a recipe, just buy a few bottles of table wine and ditch the cocktail bar. On the other hand, if the food menu is low-maintenance, jazz up your spread with a specialty cocktail (and possibly a few other alternatives).
  • Get your friends to help. After you decide your theme, figure out what you will ask guests to bring. It could be a bottle of wine, a side, or even a table decoration. Think outside the box and, if possible, give guests some creative freedom to make their own unique contribution to the event.
  1. Pumpkin Dinner Party

October is coming, and that means all things pumpkin! Have friends bring their favorite recipe that uses pumpkin, but plan ahead of time to ensure you don’t have 10 pumpkin pies.

  1. Fondue Dinner Party

Fondue is perfectly suited for dinner parties because it is so naturally shareable. Employ your kids or friends to help you cut bread, vegetables, and fruits into small pieces and 75% of the work is already done.

  1. Cultural Dinner Party

Choose a cultural theme of a country whose cuisine you love. It can also be a great opportunity to learn about an exotic cuisine with which you are unfamiliar. Another option is to have guests bring their favorite ethnic food from any country they’d like to create a truly international dinner party.

  1. Stir-Fry Buffet Dinner Party

This party idea takes a tip from Mongolian barbecue. Create your own list of stir-fry ingredients, including vegetables, meats, spices, and sauces. Then post a list on a Facebook event page or Google form to have friends sign up to bring the ingredients. Set out all ingredients and people can customize their own stir fry just like in the popular Mongolian restaurants.

  1. Burrito Bar Dinner Party

Use the method above to create a list of ingredients that your guests can bring, including everything from tomatoes to tortillas to cheese.

  1. You Be the Bartender Party

You can provide some basic alcohol, including vodka, gin, rum, tequila, etc., then have your guests bring their favorite mixers. You are sure to learn some great new cocktail recipes!

  1. Finger Food Dinner Party

Ask your guests to bring their favorite finger food. You’re sure to get a wide variety of quiches, dumplings, sandwiches, and more. Plus, it allows you to invite more people since you won’t necessarily need to be seated at a table in order to eat.
